Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My Target Audience:

Girls aged 10-15

- My results show a clear majority of my survey audience were female (72.7%). Consequently I will understand more about what a female wants in a magazine; this is partly the reason I decided to aim my magazine at a female audience.

Cover Artist:

The cover artist of my magazine is a female, near the age of my own audience. They will prove to be an inspiration for my audience who will idolise the artist based on her wealth, success and lifestyle. 'Daisy-Mae' will also be able to relate to the audience's own feelings and experiences because she has gone through it all before.

The pose of the cover artist is typically used in music magazines and portrays a sense of shock (at the latest gossip?) and shows that they are fun and care-free because they are not simply looking at the camera. This ides is reflected in my own artist's pose, making my magazine conventional of other magazines of the same genre.

Examples of similar poses:

Costume:

My Chosen Costume:

I chose this costume for the main artist to wear on the front cover because I think it is conventional of both the genre of my magazine and my target audience.
The light blue appeals to the 'girly girl' stereotype because it is a pale colour; light blue is also part of the house style of my magazine.
The gold, chunky, flowery necklace is also conventional because it is sparkly and makes a statement. This accessory idea is shown in my costume colleges (see above) and is also a common look among girls aged 10-15.

Wearing bright colours suggests that the artist is happy and fun. These are both themes that I want to be presented in my magazine. Also, by being fashionable and on-trend the artist is more appealing to the audience and the magazine is portrayed as up-to date and more professional.

Props:

The props I have chosen are shown in the prop college above (apart from the cat mask). They are conventional because they all promote a 'fun' theme to the magazine; something that will hopefully by shown throughout the magazine.
I have decided to include a small photo-shoot on my double page spread, like in the pictures shown above. This makes the artist appear more relaxed and down to earth. The audience will consequently see them as less of an artist and more of a friend.

Make Up:

My target audience are portrayed as innocent and childlike therefore heavy make-up would be unsuitable for a magazine aimed at them. Although they are interested in make-up it is unlikely that they will wear a huge amount themselves. Parents are also more likely to buy the magazine if the cover artist is deemed appropriate for the audience. For this reason I have chosen to go for a natural look to my artist.
