All these magazines feature at least one primary colour. This successfully appeals to the target audience because the colours are child-like and simple. Black and white are consistently used on front covers to put emphasis on text and images. Using these colours makes the text more apparent, causing it to almost stand out from the page. A mixture of colours and black and white gives the magazine a professional yet fun and happy theme. As is common with most magazines a triad colour scheme is used which avoids the front cover becoming too cluttered. Too many colours can result in a messy look to a magazine, the professional theme lost.
My Colour Scheme:
I used two different websites in order to create my colour scheme: Paletton and Adobe Kuler. Both of these sites allow you to use a triad colour wheel; by changing one colour the wheel will determine which two other colours best compliment it.
This is one of the colour schemes I created on Paletton. I like these colours because they are all bright and so connote fun and happiness, a theme I would like for my own magazine. In my questionnaire pink and purple achieved the top two results for 'Which colours would you associate with a pop music magazine?' As a result of this I may be inclined to include pink and purple in my colour scheme because they are stereotypical of both a pop music magazine and of my target audience of young girls.
I like this colour scheme because I think that although these colours are not commonly used on the front cover of a pop magazine, they still reflect the same themes and connotations of other colour schemes. The pink used is similar to the pink of my logo, which means that it would be easy to incorporate the colours into my magazine. I would also use a small amount of black and white in order to highlight certain features and images. This draws the audience's eye to the main stories.
I used Adobe Kuler to make this triad colour scheme based on the colour of my logo. As a result I have decided I will use this colour scheme for my magazine. The light blue, yellow and both the light and dark pink compliment each other. The pink appeals to the target age and gender for my magazine (females, 10-13). A stereotypical girl colour will hopefully encourage more girls to be drawn to and purchase the magazine. Yellow has connotations of happiness, joy and excitement; themes that are represented throughout the magazine. The light blue, although still representing a fun approach for the magazine, is also a calming colour and calms down the brightness of the yellow and pink.
I will also use black and white writing throughout in order highlight certain features (eg. feature stories, feature images, masthead).
